How We Began
Thumbs Up was founded in 2014 by several community members in honor of two great men, Bob Schmit and Chuck Dahlheimer, who, like many others, took their lives after living in silence from a mental illness.

Our mission is to promote understanding and advocacy for mental health across all ages and demographics. At Thumbs Up for Mental Health, we believe bringing the community together is essential for raising awareness and providing support. By creating a sense of belonging and connection, we help break down the isolation and stigma often associated with mental health challenges. To achieve this mission, Thumbs Up offers a variety of impactful programs.

What We Do

• Adultish – A program that supports young adults during their transition into adulthood, focusing on mental health resources relevant to this stage of life.
• Cheer Bags – We distribute bags filled with uplifting items and resources to individuals facing mental health challenges, designed to provide comfort and encouragement.
• Community Outreach Events – Organizing activities that bring the community together to learn about mental health, share experiences, and promote support.
• Nana’s Calming Corner – a designated space that provides tools and activities for relaxation and stress relief, catering primarily to those needing a calming environment.
• No One Sits Solo® – An initiative to reduce loneliness and isolation by encouraging social connections among individuals, especially in group settings.
• Referral Assistance – Offering guidance and referrals to mental health resources and professionals to ensure individuals receive the needed help.
• Survivors of Suicide Loss – Providing resources and support to individuals dealing with loss, helping them navigate their grief journey.
